| ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The act of creating wood figure sculptures is not only an attempt to communicate personal expression, but also a means to come to a deep understanding of humanity. It is a part of most cultures to use masks and costumes as disquises to pass from one state of spirituality or maturity to another. The disquise becomes a representation of the power we seek or a means to hide from that which we fear.
The masks are metapors of cover and protection. Protection from the misguided fear of knowing the self. Truth may also be found in the gesture of the figure giving a glimpse of how we see ourselves in states of power or victimization an how our actions give us away.
It has always been my nature to be physical, and wood carving is a satisfying solution to my search for a media of expression. wood has an aesthetic natural quality that must be honored. The process of carving and an intimate knowledge of the wood must come together before a work of art can be created. the beauty of wood with its flaws relates to our own flawed beauty. |
